HIV Risk Management

At Eaton & Australind Medical Centre, our dedicated approach to HIV risk management underscores our commitment to preventive healthcare and the well-being of our community. Understanding the significant impact that HIV/AIDS has globally, we offer comprehensive services aimed at minimising individuals’ risk of contracting HIV. Our strategies include detailed risk assessments, education on safe practices, and the latest advancements in medical prevention methods. We believe in empowering our patients with knowledge and providing them with the necessary tools to make informed decisions about their health, thereby actively contributing to the reduction of new HIV infections in our community.

Our risk management program is tailored to meet the needs of each individual, recognising that risk factors can vary among patients. By maintaining a confidential and non-judgmental environment, we ensure that all patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and receiving the care they need. Our proactive approach includes regular updates on the latest research and prevention techniques, ensuring that our community is well-informed and protected against the evolving landscape of HIV risk.

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Prescribing and Monitoring

At Eaton & Australind Medical Centre, we prescribe and monitor Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for individuals who are at high risk of HIV exposure. This preventive medication has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection when taken consistently as prescribed. Our healthcare professionals are trained to guide patients through the process, from assessing their suitability for PrEP to providing ongoing support and monitoring to ensure efficacy and adherence to the medication regimen.

The initiation of PrEP at our clinic begins with a thorough evaluation, including a discussion of the patient’s lifestyle, risk factors, and a comprehensive health check. We understand the importance of continuous care in the effectiveness of PrEP, which is why we offer regular follow-up appointments to monitor side effects, assess kidney function, and test for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment that encourages open communication, ensuring that patients feel informed and confident in their HIV prevention strategy.

Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Prescribing and Monitoring

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is another critical component of our HIV risk management services. PEP is intended for emergency use following a potential exposure to HIV, such as through unprotected sex, needle-sharing, or needle stick injury. Eaton & Australind Medical Centre provides prompt access to PEP, emphasising the importance of starting the treatment as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours after exposure. Our team ensures that patients receive the necessary medication alongside comprehensive guidance on completing the treatment course.

Our approach to PEP involves not only the urgent administration of the medication but also a series of follow-up appointments to monitor for any side effects and to conduct HIV testing at appropriate intervals post-exposure. We stress the significance of adherence to the PEP regimen to maximise its effectiveness in preventing the contraction of HIV. Our healthcare providers are dedicated to supporting patients throughout the entire process, offering professional advice to navigate this challenging period.

How PrEP and PEP Works

PrEP and PEP work by introducing antiretroviral medications into the body that inhibit the virus’s ability to replicate and establish an infection. PrEP is taken before exposure to HIV, building a protective level of the medication in the body, which lowers the risk of HIV infection if exposed. On the other hand, PEP is an emergency treatment that interrupts the HIV virus’s potential to infect the body after exposure. Both methods are highly effective when used correctly and consistently, forming an integral part of modern HIV prevention strategies.

Understanding the mechanisms of PrEP and PEP allows our team at Eaton & Australind Medical Centre to provide precise and accurate information to our patients, ensuring they are fully aware of how these treatments work and their role in prevention. Our approach is rooted in science-based evidence and a deep commitment to patient education, empowering individuals to take proactive steps in managing their HIV risk with confidence and understanding.
