Wedge Resections of the Toenail

Wedge resections of the toenail are a common surgical procedure performed at Eaton & Australind Medical Centre, aimed at providing relief to patients suffering from recurrent toenail infections, ingrown toenails, and other nail-related abnormalities. This procedure involves the surgical removal of a portion of the toenail and the nail bed beneath it, typically on one or both sides of the toenail, to prevent the affected section from growing back and causing further discomfort or infection.

The precise nature of a wedge resection allows for targeted treatment of the affected area, reducing the risk of recurrence and promoting healthier nail growth.

The need for a wedge resection often arises from chronic ingrown toenails that do not respond to more conservative treatments, such as lifting the nail or using splints. Patients who experience repeated infections, significant pain, and difficulty with walking or wearing shoes may be considered candidates for this procedure. At Eaton & Australind Medical Centre, our experienced practitioners assess each case individually, ensuring that a wedge resection is the most appropriate and effective course of action for the patient’s specific condition. This patient-centred approach helps alleviate pain and restore normal function to the affected toe.

What are Wedge Resections?

Wedge resections are a surgical intervention designed to address toenail conditions by removing a segment of the toenail and the underlying nail matrix. This method is particularly effective for treating ingrown toenails that cause recurrent pain and infection. By excising a wedge-shaped piece of the toenail and nail bed, the procedure aims to permanently resolve the issue by preventing the affected part of the nail from regrowing. This targeted approach ensures that the remaining part of the nail grows normally, reducing the likelihood of future complications related to the same area.

The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia, minimising discomfort for the patient during the surgery. Most patients can resume their normal activities after the procedure. Post-operative care is crucial to prevent infection and ensure proper healing, involving simple measures such as keeping the area clean and dry and following the aftercare instructions provided by our medical team. Eaton & Australind Medical Centre places emphasis on patient education, ensuring individuals are fully informed about the care and precautions necessary to facilitate recovery.

How We Perform Wedge Resections

At Eaton & Australind Medical Centre, wedge resections are carried out by skilled practitioners who specialise in minor surgical procedures. The process begins with a thorough examination of the affected toenail, followed by the administration of a local anaesthetic to numb the area. Using sterile surgical instruments, the practitioner carefully removes the affected portion of the toenail and nail bed, taking care to minimise trauma to the surrounding tissue. The area is then cleaned and dressed with sterile materials to promote healing.

We maintain a clean and hygienic environment in our surgical rooms, adhering to strict infection control protocols. Post-procedure, our team provides comprehensive guidance on wound care, pain management, and signs of infection to watch for, ensuring patients are well-equipped to manage their recovery at home. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and address any concerns, ensuring a supportive and attentive continuum of care.

Our Approach at Eaton & Australind Medical

Our approach to managing toenail conditions, including the performance of wedge resections, is holistic and patient-focused. At Eaton & Australind Medical Centre, we understand that each patient’s situation is unique, and we tailor our treatment plans to meet individual needs and preferences. Prior to recommending surgery, we explore all available treatment options, reserving wedge resection for cases where less invasive measures have proven ineffective. Our goal is not only to treat the immediate problem but also to provide long-term solutions.

Education is a key component of our approach, empowering patients with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their care. We discuss the potential risks and benefits of the procedure, what to expect during recovery, and how to prevent future toenail problems. Our practitioners are dedicated to fostering an open and supportive environment where patients feel comfortable asking questions and expressing concerns.
