Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Safe, Gentle Ear Wax Removal at Eaton and Australind Medical Centres

Blocked ears can be frustrating and uncomfortable. Ear wax build-up may cause reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), discomfort, dizziness or difficulty wearing hearing aids.

At Eaton and Australind Medical Centres, we offer a dedicated Ear Wax Management Clinic, providing modern ear wax removal using microsuction and manual removal techniques. These methods are widely regarded as safer and more precise than traditional ear syringing because they avoid introducing water into the ear canal.

Our clinics are conducted by specially trained practice nurses using specialised equipment in a calm, clinical environment, with medical support available if required.

Why Choose Microsuction?

Microsuction is a modern method of removing ear wax using a fine, low-pressure suction device while the ear canal is viewed under magnification. This allows wax to be removed accurately while minimising trauma to the ear canal.

Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction is a dry procedure, meaning no water is introduced into the ear. This significantly reduces the risk of infection and makes the procedure suitable for many patients who cannot safely undergo ear irrigation.

Microsuction is commonly used by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists and is increasingly becoming the preferred method of ear wax removal.

Benefits of Microsuction

  • No water introduced into the ear canal
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Gentle and precise removal
  • Suitable for many patients with previous ear surgery or a perforated eardrum
  • Usually completed in a single appointment
  • Immediate improvement in hearing when wax is successfully removed
  • Performed under direct visualisation for improved accuracy

Manual Ear Wax Removal

Some ear wax cannot be removed safely using suction alone.

In these cases, our clinicians may use specialised instruments to gently remove the wax under direct visualisation. This technique is often combined with microsuction to achieve the safest and most effective result.

Symptoms of Ear Wax Build-Up

You may benefit from ear wax removal if you experience:

  • Blocked or muffled hearing
  • A feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Ear discomfort
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Hearing aid blockage
  • Difficulty hearing conversations
  • Wax visible in the ear canal

Not all ear symptoms are caused by wax. If we identify another cause for your symptoms, we will advise you on the appropriate next steps.

Is Microsuction Right for Everyone?

Microsuction is suitable for most people.

It may be particularly appropriate for patients who:

  • Have had previous ear surgery
  • Have a history of a perforated eardrum
  • Experience recurrent ear infections
  • Wear hearing aids
  • Have previously found ear syringing uncomfortable or unsuccessful

Before treatment, your ears will be examined to determine the most appropriate method of management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microsuction painful?

Most people experience little or no discomfort. Some notice a brief tickling sensation or temporary dizziness immediately afterwards, which usually settles within a few minutes.

Is microsuction safer than ear syringing?

Microsuction avoids introducing water into the ear canal and allows the clinician to continuously visualise the ear during the procedure. For these reasons, it is generally considered a safer and more precise method of ear wax removal than traditional ear syringing.

Can I clean my ears with cotton buds?

No. Cotton buds usually push wax deeper into the ear canal and may damage the delicate skin or eardrum.

How often should ear wax be removed?

Many people never require ear wax removal. Others, particularly hearing aid users or those who naturally produce excessive wax, may benefit from periodic treatment. We can advise you based on your individual circumstances.

Can children have microsuction?

Children may be suitable for microsuction depending on their age, ability to cooperate and the nature of the ear problem. Please contact us to discuss your child’s needs before booking.
